This illustration is a portrait of the lion-faced and serpent-bodied Archon Demiurge, Yaldabaoth. Yaldabaoth is the chief god and creator of the six lesser Demiurges and their corresponding planetary realms, the material world of Earth, and its living ecosystem which includes humankind. Each of these Archon Demiurges corresponds to one of the seven planets known at the time of the early Gnostics. Yaldabaoth, the lord and creator of the Gnostic Pantheon, resides within the outermost of these worlds, Saturn. External to these inner-nested planetary dimensions lies the unknowable, ineffable perfection of the timeless Pleroma's infinite foundational realm. The Moon, according to many Gnostic researchers, assumes the role of a hyper-dimensional yet localized out-post, over-watch, and planetary genetic control system of Archon inception and ministry. An artificial and omniscient custodian that is evermore hovering in a circuit on the edge of time above the Archon's creation. Earth.
The ancient Gnostics believed that the material world of our experience exists as an imitation and limitation of the foundational higher realm of the Pleroma. The Demiurge Yaldabaoth, who created the seven heavens, the other lower Demiurges, the physical field of time and space, and humanity itself, did so out of loneliness and vengeance against his Aeon mother Sophia for casting him out of the higher reality and into the surrounding abyss of nothingness as an embarrassment and abomination. Yaldabaoth stole powers of creation from his mother to contrive an alternate universe, but he possessed none of her knowledge and wisdom within himself internally. Yaldabaoth's achievement of humankind, however, quickly inspired the notice of those eminent and incognizable spiritual beings (the Aeons) that reside outside of the seven heavens and within the foundational spiritual expanse. With joyful curiosity, these mysterious Aeons breathed into humanity the light of their eternal Soul. A light whose authentic home and animating power abide outside of the mundane illusion of physical reality and within the highest spiritual realm.
The Demiurge Yaldabaoth saw this and became enraged with jealousy as he realized his creation had become infused with the light of soul and endless potential for creativity that he and his other Archon gods were congenitally lacking. Out of retaliation, Yaldaboath and the rest of the Archon Pantheon interminably bring suffering, war, as well as creative and spiritual confusion upon the minds and endlessly cycling bodies of humanity.
However, this is only half of the story, the negative half. The Gnostics also believed that this very unceasing Archon influence upon the minds and cultures of the human species provides the adequate spiritual stress and suffering to catalyze genuine knowledge, love, wisdom, creativity and the overall conscious evolution of the human race. If humanity can free itself from the unceasing influence of subconscious Archon meddling through the process of deliberate Gnosis (knowledge), it can then release its innate inner creative potential instilled within by the Aeons of the foundational higher reality. Then, at death, the evolved individual consciousnesses of humanity's constituent body of men and women can free themselves from the endless reincarnation cycle within the Archon's material world of suffering, and forever return to the transcendental Pleromic realm that is home to their soul's original spark.
